This year's European Week for Safety and Health at Work, held from 19 to 23 October 2020, is raising awareness about the recently launched Campaign 2020-22 Healthy Workplaces Lighten the Load, which focuses on preventing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).
Highlights
Farming is a sector with one of the highest rates of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), as it traditionally involves heavy loads, repetitive movements and static postures. A new discussion paper looks into the example of Italy’s Marche region to examine how mechanisation can reduce the MSDs risk factors.
Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are the focus of EU-OSHA’s latest Healthy Workplaces Campaign, and with good reason. These debilitating conditions, which include backache and neck pain, are the most common ailments among workers in Europe.
The campaign was launched at a press conference with the European Commissioner Nicolas Schmit, the German Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Hubertus Heil and EU-OSHA’s Executive Director, Christa Sedlatschek.

Thousands of participants are gearing up for one of the biggest events in the occupational safety and health (OSH) calendar.
The European Week for Safety and Health at Work marks the official launch of the Healthy Workplaces Lighten the Load campaign, focusing on musculoskeletal disorders. The multilingual campaign website, launched earlier in the month, offers a wide range of information, access to publications, case studies and practical tools and guidelines.
Following the postponement of the XXII World Congress on Safety and Health at Work, a virtual meeting about occupational safety and health (OSH) and COVID-19 is held on 5 and 6 October 2020.
The event looks into a global action approach for resilient and sustainable workplaces through good governance and strong social dialogue. It also explores the relation among OSH, business continuity, and employment and labour rights in the light of COVID-19.

Europe’s rich linguistic diversity represents a key element in the cultural heritage of the continent that must be preserved and enhanced. Consequently, every 26 September we celebrate the European Day of Languages.
Multilingualism is a cornerstone of EU-OSHA’s work to make European workplaces safer, healthier and more productive. It significantly contributes to achieve greater intercultural knowledge sharing and to spread messages more effectively.
TEST How can we help small companies keep their workforce safe, particularly today, in the context of the unparalleled health crisis prompted by COVID-19? France has recently come up with an elegant solution through a grant scheme.
Occupational exoskeletons are wearable assistive devices that can reduce physical strain at work. They can offer a solution where other technical, organisational or ergonomic design measures are not enough. Yet their use remains limited. Human-centred design and biomechanical risk assessment are key to ensuring the acceptance and wider uptake of these devices, and their effectiveness in MSD prevention.
A new article explores the findings of a joint INAIL-IIT project looking at exoskeletons and how to maximise their potential to reduce work-related MSDs.
